Typography
  • All of the opening credits are the colour red. By making them red, it connotes blood and danger. Red is also the colour we perceive as the devil therefore we can also assume the movie may have dark influence. The colour chosen creates a suspense feeling from the very start.
  • The credits fade in and out very smoothly and ghost-like and are not on the screen for too long. This foreshadows the rest of the movie and the audience can interpret that the film will feature ghosts and along the paranormal theme.
  • For the majority of the credits, when they are about to fade out, the words behind slowly go up in white/grey smoke which again, creates suspense and is ghost-like.
  • The font throughout the sequence is in capital letters. When names are shown, the font is larger causing the name to stand out and be readable. Capitalization of words can connotes seriousness and attention will increase. Therefore the audience can interpret that the film will keep there attention and be serious which adds to the suspense.  When other words are shown e.g. "DIRECTED BY", the font size is more small as it is less important the names of the cast and crew.
  • The last credit to appear is the director's name. This is because the director is considered the most important therefore should be at the end.
  • The placement of the credits are in the shots that are shown in the opening sequence. The opening sequence is uses low key lighting which means the credits appear in the darkest sections of the screen so it is readable. They vary from left right and center depending on where the darkness is. As the credits disappear in a ghost-like manner, by having them placed at different sections of the screen, it contributes to the tension and ghost-like movement.
  • The actual film title appears near the beginning after the production company names were shown. This is placed well in the sequence as it is in relation to the sudden loud music which creates a scare for the audience. It also introduced the name of the film and allows for the rest of the credits to run smoothly and still create tension.
  • The credit duration's differ from 4-12 seconds long with the majority being 4-5 seconds. This is including the effects put on the credits and is a good time as it fits in well with the music. The opening sequence is slow therefore having a slow duration of credits does fit in place.
Relationship between text and visuals

  • From watching the sequence, it is clear to see that it is important where you place the credits in the sequence as it is vital they are readable and are suited against the background.
  • For this movie the genre is supernatural and the relationship between the text and visuals demonstrate this well. This is because the visuals are of dark lighting and the text blood which are both common in a dark evil theme.
  • The film is an independent film but was distributed by Sony Pictures for theatrical distribution after being premiered at the TIFF. The credits of the film are edited well and do not look like low budget film credits.

Ideas I can use for my opening sequence
  • The genre of this horror movie is supernatural horror which is the same as the sequence I will be doing therefore different aspects of the opening sequence were useful.
  • I found that the fade in and out transition of the credit's worked very well as they represented the genre. I think this would work very well for my opening sequence as our sequence involves ghost-like happenings.
  • The colour of the font was significant due to the connotations it lead to and it was easily readable against the background which was mainly dark. I will ensure that the font colour in my sequence is readable against the background and has significance.
  • I thought that the title of the film appearing on a black background only was very good as the audience would solely focus on the title and not anything else as there was nothing to see. I think this would be a good way to show the title of the film.

Excellent work Mia, what do you think of the idea of slowly rotating your frame in some places to give a more surreal feel ie. the hair raising scene, the sound track for this with a lot of strings is quite effective too? 20/20
